- A meal
- Storage
- Cool, dry place
Adults: take one tablet daily with a meal. One tablet is the full daily serving. The adult upper limit for zinc is 40 mg a day from all sources, food included, so do not combine this with other zinc supplements and count the zinc in any multivitamin you take. Store in a cool, dry place.
Who it's for
- Adults who want daily zinc for normal immune function†
- People eating mostly plant-based diets, which tend to supply less absorbable zinc
- Athletes and people who train hard
- Diets light on meat, shellfish and dairy
Not recommended for
- Anyone already taking a multivitamin or other supplement with zinc, without checking the total
- Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals without medical guidance
- Anyone under 18
- People on quinolone or tetracycline antibiotics, penicillamine or thiazide diuretics, without checking with a doctor or pharmacist
- Anyone who wants copper included; this is zinc only
FAQ
Why 20 mg and not 50 mg?
The adult upper limit for zinc is 40 mg a day from food and supplements combined. It is set there because sustained high zinc intake interferes with copper absorption. A 50 mg tablet is over that limit before you have eaten anything. At 20 mg you get 182% of the Daily Value and still have room for the zinc in your food. For the same reason the serving is one tablet a day; two would reach the limit on their own.
What is L-OptiZinc®?
L-OptiZinc® is Lonza's branded zinc mono-L-methionine: each zinc ion is bound to one molecule of the amino acid L-methionine. In a small human study, zinc methionine raised blood zinc more than zinc sulfate when both were taken with water. Most of the other absorption research on this form was done in animals, so we keep the claim to that.
Should I take it with food?
Yes. The label says with a meal, and zinc on an empty stomach can cause nausea. Phytates in whole grains and legumes bind zinc in the gut, so a meal that is lighter on those is a good one to pick.
Do I need copper with it?
This tablet contains no copper. The copper concern comes from sustained high zinc intake: the NIH notes that 50 mg or more a day for weeks can interfere with copper absorption, and the 40 mg upper limit is set with copper in mind. One tablet is 20 mg. If you plan to take zinc long term and have questions about copper, ask your healthcare provider.
Can I take it with a multivitamin or iron?
Check the multivitamin label first. Many contain zinc, and all of it counts toward the 40 mg a day upper limit. Iron supplements of 25 mg or more taken at the same time can reduce zinc absorption, so take those with a different meal.
Does it interact with medications?
It can. Zinc can interfere with quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics and with penicillamine when they are taken at the same time, and thiazide diuretics increase zinc loss. If you take any prescription medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Where and how is it made?
In the USA, with globally sourced ingredients, in an NPA GMP-certified, third-party audited, FDA-registered facility that follows FDA's cGMP rules for dietary supplements (21 CFR Part 111).
What are the other ingredients for?
They make the tablet. Dicalcium phosphate and cellulose form its body, cellulose gum helps it break apart after you swallow it, and vegetable stearin, magnesium stearate and silica keep the powder flowing and off the tablet press. There are no colors, flavors or sweeteners.
Can I take it with Men's Vitality?
We do not recommend it. Men's Vitality already provides 15 mg of zinc, and together with this tablet and the zinc in food you would be close to the 40 mg a day adult upper limit.
Who should not take it?
It is for adults. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare provider first.

Zinc is essential for normal immune function. Zinc ions help regulate signaling inside the cells of both the innate and the adaptive immune system.

In a crossover study of nine adults given 25 mg of zinc with water, zinc methionine raised plasma zinc more than zinc sulfate over four hours. When the same doses were taken with a high-phytate, plant-based meal, none of the forms tested offset the meal's effect.

A systematic review of 12 studies found that athletes had lower serum zinc than non-athletes despite eating more zinc. The authors suggest athletes may have a higher zinc requirement than people who are physically inactive.

The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults is 40 mg of zinc a day from food and supplements, set on the basis of zinc's effect on copper status. Doses of 50 mg or more taken for weeks can interfere with copper absorption.
