FAQ

What is partially hydrolyzed guar gum?

A soluble fiber made from guar beans. Plain guar gum thickens water into a gel; partial hydrolysis shortens its fiber chains, so it dissolves clear and stays thin while keeping its fiber.

How much should I take?

The label directs one tablespoon, about 4 g, which provides 3 g of soluble fiber. For reference, the studies on regularity used 5 to 7 g of this fiber a day.

What can I mix it into?

Any non-carbonated drink or soft food: water, coffee, tea, juice, shakes, yogurt or oatmeal. Use at least 4 oz. Do not mix it into carbonated drinks.

Will it change the taste or texture?

It is unflavored and dissolves clear without grit or gel, so most drinks look and taste the same.

Will it cause gas?

Some people notice gas or bloating when they add fiber. Start with one tablespoon a day and drink enough water. In the seven studies pooled in a 2017 review, no adverse events were reported.

How long until I notice a difference?

In a 12-week trial at 5 g a day, stool form improved compared with placebo from the third week. Results vary from person to person; take it daily.

Is it a prebiotic?

It is a soluble fiber that bacteria in the colon ferment. In trials, it increased Bifidobacterium compared with placebo.

Where and how is it made?

In the USA, with globally sourced ingredients, in an NPA GMP-certified, third-party audited, FDA-registered facility that follows FDA's cGMP rules for dietary supplements (21 CFR Part 111).

Is it vegan and gluten free?

Yes. It is one ingredient, SunFiber® partially hydrolyzed guar gum, and is vegan, gluten free and non-GMO.

Who should check with a doctor first?

Anyone pregnant or nursing, taking medication, managing a digestive condition, or with difficulty swallowing.

Can I use it if I compete in a tested sport?

This product does not carry a banned-substance certification such as NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport. If you compete under anti-doping rules, check with your governing body before using any supplement.

What research is behind the ingredients?

  1. A systematic review pooled seven studies of partially hydrolyzed guar gum in 325 healthy adults, at 5 to 7 g a day. Bowel movement frequency rose by about 0.58 a day on average compared with control, and no adverse events were reported. One tablespoon of this product provides 3 g of fiber, below the amounts studied.

  2. 44 adults with loose, frequent stools took 5 g of partially hydrolyzed guar gum or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. Stool form moved toward normal with the fiber from week three onward, and Bifidobacterium increased, while stool frequency did not change. The study was funded by Taiyo Kagaku, which makes the fiber, and three authors work for the company.

  3. Healthy adults took 3 g or 5 g of partially hydrolyzed guar gum or a placebo daily for eight weeks. Both doses changed the gut bacteria compared with placebo, but bowel movement frequency improved only in the 5 g group.
